From 0 to 100 Years in 150 seconds

Dutch filmmaker Jeroen Wolf went out on the streets of Amsterdam in October 2011 and asked people one simple question: “How old are you?”. Then he pasted the answers in chronological order in a video.

The video is in Dutch, but just keep counting in your head in English, and you’ll know their age.

It’s really nice to see every aspect of the face change over time, see human development. Also, good to see that the pride we take in our age, which seems to fade over time, reoccurs when that age becomes extraordinary.

also handy if you want to hear people count to 100.

On this day in Dutch history

On the 19th of May 1872, Johan Hendrik van Dale died. He revised the first edition of the Dutch dictionary from 1864, and did such a thorough job that his name is linked to the most wellknown Dutch dictionary rather than the creators’ names.

Van Dale’s parents lived in Eeklo in Flanders, but left for Sluis in the Netherlands when a smallpox epidemic broke out in Eeklo. Van Dale was born and raised in Sluis, and also became a teacher in his hometown, as well as an archivist. In 1854 he even became headteacher of the school.

Van Dale was also a linguist, and wrote several educational books about language, parsing, rhetoric and other related subjects.

In 1867, he was given the job to revise the first 1864 edition of the Nieuwe Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (The New Dictionary of the Dutch Language), which was created by Isaac Marcus Calisch and Natahn Salomon Calisch. Van Dale did the job in 4 years.

As a teacher, Van Dale kept his own pupils in mind when revising and clarifying the definitions. He had been quite annoyed at vague or unclear definitions, so he wanted to make sure that this dictionary would be better.

In his foreword to the second edition he wrote that working on a dictionary is ungrateful and saddening, because while there is a lot that has been improved and included, there remains so much more that has escaped attention and as such remains unimproved.

His edition of the dictionary was released in 1872, and as the books were released, Van Dale died of smallpox. One of his pupils, Jan Manhave, completed the final editing. Manhave also revised the third edition of the dictionary.

While the current edition is its 14th edition, none of the other editors are linked to the Dutch dictionary like Van Dale is. Its current name is the Van Dale Groot Woordenboek van de Nederlandse Taal (Van Dale’s Large Dictionary of the Dutch Language), commonly referred to as the Dikke Van Dale (Big Van Dale).

Nationale Dodenherdenking
Jaarlijks herdenken wij op 4 mei de Nederlandse slachtoffers van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De Tweede Wereldoorlog begon in 1939 en eindigde eind 1945. Maar voor Nederland wordt de inval op 10 mei 1940 door de Duitsers als het begin en de capitulatie op 5 mei 1945 als het einde van de oorlog beschouwd. Vanavond om 20.00 uur herdenken wij de oorlogsslachtoffers door 2 minuten stil te zijn.

Morgen, 5 mei, vieren we onze vrijheid.

National Remembrance Day
Annually on May 4th, we remember the Dutch victims of World War II. WWII began in 1939 and ended late 1945. But for the Netherlands, the invasion on May 10th 1940 by the Germans is seen as the beginning and the capitulation on 5 May 1945 as the end of the war. Tonight at 20.00 o’clock we rememeber the war victims with 2 minutes of silence.

Tomorrow, May 5th, we celebrate our freedom.

Please remember that we not only remember the victims of the Second World War but also all victims since then.

It will NOT be a religious ceremony, though some religious tones may be used, but we’re a democracy that firmly separates Church and State.

There will NOT be a coronation, though there is a crown. There is no one in the Netherlands who can crown a King. It is a matter of state.

The King and Queen will be the guests of the States-General.

Basically the inauguration will be a meeting of the States-General in which they will accept and swear an oath to King Willem-Alexander. (though the oath is not obligatory, there are some members of parliament who refuse to do so).

King Willem-Alexander will then give his first speech as King.

Queen Beatrix will abdicate on Tuesday in favour of her son Willem-Alexander who will be crowned King of the Netherlands at an investiture ceremony attended by Prince Charles and other heirs to thrones around the world.

If you’re wondering what’s happening tomorrow, it’s:

1) The final Queen’s Day for a long time to come

2) The abdication of Queen Beatrix

3) The investiture of her son as King Willem-Alexander.

Queen’s Day is not the Queen’s birthday, but in fact is celebrated on the last Queen’s birthday, because Beatrix was born in January and January weather doesn’t make for good outdoor partying, so she kept it on the 30th. However, Willem-Alexander’s birthday is on April 27th, so they’re moving it to that date (except for next year, when that date is on a Sunday, and we don’t do national holidays on Sunday except for religious ones) and it’ll be King’s Day.

Willem-Alexander is the first king since 1890 (we had the queen regent Emma, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix since the last Willem). He’s a cool sort of dude, not really hung up on ceremony. He has a wife, Máxima, who is ridiculously popular here (because she is amazing and lovely and if you disagree I don’t want you in my life, so please get the fuck out). She will become queen, but he will “rule,” so to say.

We don’t have a coronation, because that’s not a thing we do. We have an investiture, in which Willem-Alexander is sworn in and will promise to uphold all his kingly duties “so help him God almighty.” Parliament, if they don’t have moral objections, will swear allegiance to the new king. Not all of them will be doing this, but that’s okay, because parliamentary democracy + royal family, ya dig?

Anyway, I love our royals. I don’t give a shit that we pay them money, because it’s not like I’d get my money back if we didn’t have them. It’d just go to more shit I hate, like the Joint Strike Fighter. At least I get a golden carriage and pomp and circumstance and adorable princesses and royal weddings for my money. You know?

So anyway, that’s what’s happening tomorrow and that’s all I’ll be posting about.

Last night we visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This Saturday Queen Beatrix will officially open the museum, which was closed for an entire decade. The Dutch are delighted that this beautiful museum will open it’s doors again: missing it for 10 years was just too much. And this excitement is not for nothing; the Rijksmuseum is an absolute must see for everyone. We will probably visit every week to discover all there is to see: 8000 works of art that cover 8 centuries of Dutch art and history.
